Public Health Wales has welcomed plans for a national lung screening programme, which will help diagnose cancer earlier, improve treatment outcomes and save lives.

The Welsh Government’s decision to introduce screening for current and former smokers aged 55 to 74 follows advice it received from Public Health Wales in March.

The programme will be introduced in stages, with people at the upper end of the age range invited first. The first invitations for screening are expected to be sent out in 2027.

Heather Lewis, Consultant in Public Health at Public Health Wales, said:

“We welcome the Welsh Government’s decision to introduce a national lung screening programme in Wales. Evidence shows that screening can detect lung cancer early, when it is easier to treat. This will help save lives.

“Lung cancer is the biggest cause of cancer deaths in Wales. It is often found late because symptoms may not appear in the early stages. Screening gives us the chance to find it sooner, before symptoms develop.

“We look forward to working with colleagues across NHS Wales to deliver a service that will save lives.”
