NHS Overview
Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. More than 43,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK.

Lung Cancer Answers
Over one-hundred types of cancer exist. Cancer that starts in the lungs is called lung cancer and begins when cells of a lung become abnormal and start growing out of control. When the abnormal cancer cells grow, they can form into a tumor and even metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body. Lung cancer is designated into two types: Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

Research

Institute of Cancer Research
The ICR was founded in 1909 as The Cancer Hospital Research Institute, a small research laboratory within what would become The Royal Marsden in Chelsea. It was officially opened by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, in 1911 during his visit to award The Royal Marsden its Royal Charter. When the NHS was formed in 1948, the ICR became independent from The Royal Marsden, requiring a legal separation of the two organisations. But the ICR still works in close partnership with the hospital, allowing us to have a unique ‘bench-to-bedside’ approach, and together the two organisations are rated as one of the top centres for cancer research and treatment in the world.

Roy Castle
Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation was built on research – or the lack of it. Charity founder, Professor Ray Donnelly, knew early detection was key to improving survival rates for lung cancer and so wanted to fund a research project. But no-one was interested so on Wednesday 18th April 1990, Prof. Donnelly set up the Lung Cancer Fund and started to raise money to fund the project directly.

Cancer Research UK
All cancer treatments have to be fully researched before they can be used for everyone. This is so we know that they work, they are better than the treatments already available and they are safe.

National Cancer Institute
NCI-funded researchers are working to advance our understanding of how to prevent, detect, and treat lung cancer. In particular, scientists have made progress in identifying many different genetic alterations that can drive lung cancer growth.

Lung Cancer Research Foundation
The mission of the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) is to improve lung cancer outcomes by funding research for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of lung cancer.

Tracer X
Lung TRACERx (TRAcking Cancer Evolution through therapy (Rx)) is a prospective observational cohort study that aims to transform our understanding of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) through translational research. It is a large flagship study for the main funder, Cancer Research UK.

Charity

Asthma & Lung UK
Whoever said, “We all breathe the same air” didn’t grow up in any of the places in the UK where air pollution exceeds the World Health Organisation’s recommended limits. Didn’t have to worry about being one of the 36,000 early deaths attributed to air pollution every year. Wasn’t the 1 in every 5 people who will have a lung condition in their lifetime. Or one of the 5.4 million people in the UK living with asthma.

Macmillan
Cancer that starts in the lung is called primary lung cancer. The lungs are the parts of the body that we use to breathe. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK. About 49,200 people are diagnosed with it each year.
